FAQs

What is Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is a type of anxiety disorder affecting approximately one in three individuals following a traumatic event and was initially coined to describe symptoms stemming mainly from combat exposure. Military and emergency services personnel are particularly vulnerable due to the frequent occurrence of traumatic incidents in their line of duty. However, the scope of PTSD is much wider and encompasses various groups of traumas, including:

  • violent crimes including domestic and non-domestic
  • war, torture, or terrorism
  • industrial accidents, road traffic accidents, or natural disasters
  • traumatic childbirth
  • childhood abuse and neglect
  • diagnosis of life-threatening illnesses

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD symptoms can be characterised by both psychological and physical manifestations, typically emerging within the first month following a traumatic event but potentially resurfacing a year later. Symptoms vary from individual to individual and usually impact daily functioning, rendering the sufferer unable to cope with even the smallest of task most would cope with quite easily. The most prevalent psychological symptoms include:

  • challenges with concentration and focus
  • enduring painful emptions like guilt and anxiety
  • numbness and diminished emotional responsiveness
  • episodes of anger management difficulties
  • persistent feelings of depression
  • heightened irritability and mood fluctuations

And physical symptoms can include:

  • Re-experiencing traumatic events through nightmares and flashbacks
  • Avoidance behaviours to evade confronting grief, anger, and anxiety
  • Steering clear of activities likely to trigger recollections of the trauma
  • Resorting to alcohol or drug use as a coping mechanism
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and chest pains
  • Sleep disturbances, including difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Withdrawal from work and social interactions
  • Changes in appetite resulting in weight loss or gain

Amongst the symptoms associated with PTSD, one of the most prevalent and distressing is the re-experiencing of the original trauma. This can manifest through vivid flashbacks, unsettling nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and physical sensations like sweating and trembling. Regardless of the form it takes, this involuntary re-living often closely mirrors the initial emotional and physical reactions experienced during the traumatic event. These episodes may also trigger a cascade of negative thoughts, leading to internal questioning about the profound impact on one's life and feelings of powerlessness to prevent it.

Complex PTSD Symptoms

Complex PTSD (CPTSD) delineates a distinct form of trauma endured over an extended period, typically during formative years. Unlike other manifestations of PTSD, CPTSD symptoms are more ingrained, affecting an individual on a deeper level. While mirroring many PTSD symptoms, those with CPTSD also grapple with pervasive feelings of distrust, disconnection, and emotional instability. This complex interplay of symptoms underscores the unique challenges faced by individuals with CPTSD in navigating their healing journey.

How do you treat PTSD?

Our treatment for PTSD is often effective, even if symptoms manifest long after the initial trauma. Our specific approach to treatment is tailored to the severity of symptoms and the timing of your onset relative to the traumatic incident.

Research indicates that both cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are effective in treating PTSD, as evidenced by systematic reviews. As recommended from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), we treat individuals with PTSD trauma-focused psychological treatment, such as trauma-focused CBT or EMDR, irrespective of the time elapsed since the traumatic experience. At Crystal Pathways, our approach to treating PTSD incorporates established therapy techniques aimed at alleviating symptoms and facilitating the processing of memories and emotions linked to the traumatic event, consequently restoring everyday functioning. These include:

Trauma-focused CBT

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) provides a structured approach for individuals with PTSD to gradually discuss and process traumatic events, serving as a crucial initial step in treatment. Through techniques like exposure therapy, CBT helps individuals understand and modify thought patterns and emotional reactions, enabling them to confront and manage their trauma-related emotions in a safe, supportive environment, ultimately fostering healing and resilience.

EMDR for PTSD

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach designed to assist individuals in reprocessing traumatic memories. During EMDR sessions, patients engage in a series of rapid and rhythmic eye movements guided by the therapist, aimed at promoting cognitive shifts and reducing anxiety. Patients are asked to concentrate on a specific trauma-related image while simultaneously bringing forth associated negative emotions, sensations, and thoughts. As they visually track the therapist's finger movements, the process facilitates the reprocessing of traumatic experiences and the integration of more adaptive responses.

Group therapy for PTSD

Participating in group therapy sessions with others who suffer with PTSD offers a valuable opportunity to explore and share emotions and experiences, fostering deeper understanding and validation. Through our group sessions, individuals can cultivate confidence, trust, and a sense of community, empowering them to shift their focus towards the present and away from the past.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy

This therapy approach delves into the emotional conflicts stemming from the traumatic event, especially those rooted in early experiences. Collaborating with a supportive and impartial therapist facilitates the exploration of these issues, leading to enhanced self-esteem and the acquisition of valuable coping strategies for managing intense emotions.

Close monitoring

If your initial assessment indicates mild symptoms of PTSD or if your symptoms have persisted for a relatively short duration, we may suggest a period of close monitoring. This involves closely monitoring whether your symptoms improve or worsen over time, with a follow-up appointment scheduled to reassess the need for treatment aimed at alleviating your symptoms.

Medication for PTSD

Medication is often prescribed to alleviate symptoms commonly associated with PTSD, such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. While psychological therapy is typically recommended as the primary treatment, medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tetracyclic antidepressants may be prescribed alongside therapy to enhance its effectiveness. Mirtazapine, known for its sedating properties, can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing arousal, irritability, or sleep disturbances. In cases where symptoms are severe or hinder participation in therapy, medication may be prioritised, guided by patient preference and clinical judgment.

As you progress, we fine-tune your treatment based on your evolving needs, ensuring each step you take with us enhances your journey towards optimal well-being and achievement.

Do you coordinate treatment with my GP?

We will always consider how the diagnosis and subsequent treatment will be managed, particularly if transitioning from private care to NHS services through a ‘Shared Care Agreement’. This ensures your treatment is continued seamlessly, which may involve a coordinated care plan between us and your GP.
