FAQs

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. Also known as a reading disability, dyslexia arises from individual differences in brain areas that process language. Although there’s no cure for dyslexia, early assessment and intervention can significantly improve outcomes, especially for children with dyslexia.

What are the symptoms of dyslexia?

Symptoms of dyslexia vary depending on age; however, they usually become more apparent the longer it goes untreated.

Symptoms in children before school

In early years, signs that a child may be at risk of dyslexia often include late talking, learning new words slowly, problems forming words correctly and remembering or naming letters, numbers or colours.

Symptoms in children at school age

Once your child is in school, dyslexia symptoms become more apparent. These are often first noticed by your child’s teacher where they begin learning to read, where they may be well below the expected level for their age. Additionally, symptoms include:

  • Challenges in processing and understanding what they hear
  • Difficulty finding the right words or forming responses to questions
  • Problems with sequencing and recalling ordered information
  • Difficulty recognizing similarities and differences in letters and words
  • Trouble pronouncing unfamiliar words
  • Difficulty with spelling
  • Taking an unusually long time to complete reading or writing tasks
  • Avoidance of activities that involve reading

Symptoms in teens and adults

Symptoms of dyslexia in teens and adults are a lot like those in children with the addition of:

  • Noticeably poor spelling
  • Mispronouncing names or words
  • Spending an unusually long-time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
  • Difficulty summarising text
  • Trouble learning a foreign language
  • Difficulty solving math word problems

How is dyslexia diagnosed?

Our team and network of well-rounded dyslexia experts diagnose dyslexia through our own comprehensive dyslexia assessment. Here is our proven 6 step process:

Developmental and Family History

For children: We collect information about your child’s developmental milestones, any family history of learning difficulties, and relevant medical conditions.

For adults: We gather details about your childhood learning experiences, educational background, and any history of learning difficulties within the family.

01

Observations and Interviews

For children: Our expert psychologists will observe behaviour in educational settings and conduct interviews with you, teachers, and your child.

For adults: We’ll interview you about your current challenges, work or higher education, and academic history, as well as your experiences with reading and writing.

02

Comprehensive Assessments

For children: We start your child’s dyslexia assessment with a psychometric test to evaluate your child’s reading, spelling, phonological processing, memory, and cognitive skills using standardised tests. This is followed with a language assessment to examine language comprehension and verbal skills.

For adults: In adult dyslexia assessments, we begin with a cognitive and achievement test to assess your reading, writing, and spelling skills, as well as phonological processing and working memory. We then ask you to complete a self-report questionnaire to understand your perception of your reading and writing difficulties for review by our psychologists.

03

Hearing and Vision Tests

To ensure that hearing and vision problems are not contributing to learning difficulties, we may refer you or your child to our partners in ophthalmology (opticians) and audiologists to carry out a hearing and vision test.

04

Genetic Testing

In some cases, we recommend genetic testing to rule out genetic disorders that may impact learning, such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome.

05

Review and Feedback

If a diagnosis is made;

For children and students: We will provide detailed feedback to parents and teachers and develop an individualised intervention plan to treat your child’s dyslexia.

For adults: Our dyslexia therapists will provide feedback and strategies for managing dyslexia in daily life, work, and educational settings. We also offer personalised treatment therapies for dyslexia to help improve your circumstances.

06

This thorough approach ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of both children and adults.

This may include recommending innovative tools and apps to make learning more engaging and effective.

Additionally, we work with parents and provide strategies that support your child’s learning at home.

How we treat dyslexia in adults

We treat dyslexia in adults with targeted training to enhance reading and writing abilities. Our occupational therapists and educational psychologists work with employers and universities to provide workplace and educational adjustments that support learning and occupational needs.
