What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that impacts how an individual perceives and interacts with others, leading to challenges in social communication and repetitive behaviours. The term "spectrum" signifies the wide variation in symptoms and severity across individuals.
Previously distinct conditions like autism, Asperger's syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder are now collectively referred to under ASD. Though some may still use "Asperger's syndrome" for milder cases, it falls within the broader spectrum.
ASD typically emerges in early childhood, often within the first year. However, some children develop normally initially and exhibit symptoms between 18 to 24 months. These can include difficulties in social interactions, restrictive interests, and repetitive behaviours.
While ASD has no cure, early and intensive intervention can significantly improve outcomes, helping many children lead fulfilling lives.
What are the symptoms of Autism?
Some children show signs of autism spectrum disorder early on, such as reduced eye contact, not responding to their name, or indifference towards caregivers. Others may develop typically for a few months or years, then suddenly withdraw, become aggressive, or lose language skills. Signs usually appear by age 2.
Each child with autism has unique behaviours and severity, from low to high functioning. Some have learning difficulties or lower intelligence, while others are highly intelligent but struggle with communication and social interactions.
Severity is based on impairments and their impact on daily life.
Common Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Social Communication and Interaction
- Fail to respond to their name or seem not to hear you.
- Resist cuddling and holding, preferring to play alone.
- Have poor eye contact and lack facial expression.
- Not speak or have delayed speech, or lose previous language abilities.
- Struggle to start or maintain conversations, or only talk to make requests.
- Speak with abnormal tone or rhythm, using a singsong or robot-like voice.
- Repeat words or phrases without understanding their use.
- Not understand simple questions or directions.
- Not express emotions or seem unaware of others’ feelings.
- Not point at or bring objects to show interest.
- Inappropriately approach social interactions, being passive, aggressive, or disruptive.
- Have difficulty recognising nonverbal cues.
Patterns of Behaviour
- Perform repetitive movements like rocking, spinning, or hand-flapping.
- Engage in self-harm behaviours like biting or head-banging.
- Develop specific routines or rituals and become upset with changes.
- Have coordination issues or odd movement patterns, such as walking on toes.
- Be fascinated by details of objects without understanding their overall purpose.
- Be unusually sensitive to light, sound, or touch, but indifferent to pain or temperature.
- Not engage in imitative or make-believe play.
- Fixate intensely on objects or activities.
- Have specific food preferences or refuse foods with certain textures.
As children with autism grow, some may become more engaged and show fewer behavioural disturbances. Those with less severe issues may lead near-normal lives, while others continue to struggle with language and social skills, and may face worsening behavioural and emotional challenges during their teen years.
How is Autism diagnosed?
Our team of qualified ASD therapists will look for signs of developmental delays at regular check-ups, and:
- Observe your child and ask how your child’s social interactions, communication skills, and behaviour have developed and changed over time.
- Give your child tests covering hearing, speech, language, developmental level, and social and behavioural issues.
- Present structured social and communication interactions to your child and score performance.
- Recommend genetic testing to identify whether your child has a genetic disorder such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome.
How do you treat Autism?
There is no cure for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and treatments must be tailored to each individual. Our goal is to maximise your child's ability to function by reducing ASD symptoms and supporting development and learning. Early intervention during the preschool years is highly recommended, as it helps children acquire essential social, communication, functional, and behavioural skills.
The variety of home-based and school-based treatments for ASD can be overwhelming, and your child's needs may evolve over time. We are here to recommend options and help identify local resources.
If your child is diagnosed with ASD, you can be assured we’ll outline a comprehensive treatment strategy built by a team of professionals tailored to meet their needs. Here’s our treatment options we provide:
Behaviour and Communication Therapies
Our approach to behaviour and communication therapy depends on the unique needs of your child. All address the social, language, and behavioural difficulties associated with ASD. Some focus on reducing problematic behaviours and teaching new skills, while another aims to improve social interactions and communication. Additionally, our applied behaviour analysis (ABA) helps children learn new skills and generalise them across different situations through a reward-based system.
Educational Therapies
Children with ASD often thrive in highly structured educational programmes. Our proven programmes include a team of specialists and activities designed to enhance social skills, communication, and behaviour. Intensive, individualised interventions in the preschool years can lead to significant progress.
Family Therapies
We support parents and family members to understand how to interact with their children in ways that promote social skills, manage behaviours, and teach daily living skills and communication.
APPROACH
Our comprehensive approach
We believe in a holistic approach to treating autism. It’s why we implement regular progress monitoring to track improvements and ensure our methods are effective. Additionally, our experience has taught us no case of autism is the same, which is why our intervention plans are tailored the meet the unique needs of everyone.
